New Years Goals
Kim Watters here. Today I'm here to talk about NewYear's goals. You see, I don't make resolutions. They're too easy to break. For me, a goal makes me more accountable (at least in my own mind). I don't set lofty ones--or try not too--because they would be too easy to modify. So my goals for me this year are to sell two books to Love Inspired, go to the YMCA to work out twice a week, and get and stay more organized. I can't seem to function very well if things are messy and I can't find what I'm looking for. This past year has been extremely hard because I moved and things are still in boxes and bins in my garage, and nothing has been filed, it's just sitting in a banker's box. Now that the holidays are over, it's time to get everything in its place. A quality I hope to instill in my children! In my writing, I use a lot of spreadsheets to keep track of my characters, my fictious towns, chapter scenes etc. With the click of a mouse, I can see what color my heroine's eyes are, or what shop is next to the candle store in town.
So, let's check back at the end of the year and see how I did. Will I be able to use my garage to park my car? Will I be able to find that receipt or owner's manual when I need it? Will I be dedicated enough to work out twice a week? And find time to get two books written? I'll let you know in December. Until then, what are your goals or resolutions for 2012? Inquiring minds want to know.

I agree with setting goals not resolutions. Goals are more achievable and should have measurable and have accountability. (I did goals in a few of my subjects) Learnt the best way is to write the goal down so it can be revisited and allow for change if needed.
my first goal is to have a job by the end of March.
If I put to get a job it would be to vauge where as putting by March and than adding I will apply for at least 2 jobs a week I am giving a timeframe and ways to achieve it.
my other goal is a reading one of reading a book from every state of America again. So I dont end up with finishing the last state on Dec 30 like last year I plan to read at least 5 a month if possible. that would have it read by the end of Oct. but I know there will be difficult states so it allows time for them.

Is there someone you can be accountable to? Why not set a time each couple of weeks to write in this blog about your progress! A couple of quotes come to mind that may assist in your endeavours. To create order you have to make a mess, so don't worry if things get messy at times! To eat an Elepant you have to have one bite at a time! What's the oldest profession in the world? A Prostitute, a Doctor & a Computer Programmer were argueing this. The Prostitute said she had the oldest profession. The doctor replies that he had the oldest profession because God created Eve out of Adams rib. The Computer Programmer said he had the oldest profession because God created the heavens & the earth from the confusion - who do you think caused the confusion. Hope this is helpful.

Thanks for stopping by Jenny and Jon. I agree with you 100 percent. Accountability is key even if you do set resolutions. And having someone to be accountable to is a sure way to gain your goal. In writing, it's my critique group. I'm on hiatus right now as I just turned in killer line edits and need a break but not for long. I have to turn a chapter in at our next meeting at the end of the month.
Jenny-good luck with the job search. I'll keep you in my prayers that the perfect one materializes for you.
Jon-thanks for the smile this morning.

Kim, I can't function very well if things aren't organized either. I feel my life is chaotic if they aren't.

Thanks for stopping by Jennifer and Margaret. Thanks for the prayers. One day at a time is good-especially with kids, Jennifer. You never can anticipate what's going to happen! Amen Margaret. I just have to organize my files from when I moved and then I think I'm done with the organization (for now) in my new house.

Hi Kim,
I never thought about using goals instead of resolutions. What a novel idea! No pun intended.
I'm very goal oriented, so that makes perfect sense. Thanks for the tip. Besides being goal oriented, I'm one of those list makers too. LOL I guess that makes me pathetic, but if I don't have a list each day, the important things don't get done. It's like a road map of sorts. I mean, I can't go on a trip without a map, right? How do you like that justification?
My goal is two books this year also. One indie, one Avalon.
As for getting organized, I'm sure you'll reach your goal with that also. Empty one container a day and you'll be done.
Happy New Year!

I don't do resolutions, but like the idea of Jenny's....reading a book from every state. I love to read... read 152 books last year!

I've been meaning for years to simply keep a list of the books I've read. It's simple, which means I should be able to keep it, and I think I will find it interesting to look over in future, as well as remind of authors to look for (or avoid!).

Jenny - I love the idea of reading a book for each state.
As to keeping a list of what I read this year, I have started a notebook where I list what I read as I read it. Just one of those school composition books. I hope this will let me keep up with what I read.
My goal for this year is to organize all those recipes that I have clipped out of the paper, off boxes, etc. I have the notebooks to put them in labeled by categories. I even have the first recipes in them. Hopefully by the end of the year they will all be filed and any new ones will be in their place.

Hi Kim! Jon here again. Just wondering how you have been doing? How's the chapter been coming along? Are you happy with it? Any luck with the your filing stuff? Jon :)

Well Jon,
Thanks for asking. Nope, haven't even touched the filing. Family life has intruded. I can park in my garage now, but at the expense of working out twice a week. Sigh. I have to proof my line edits now, so no current writing for at least a week. Thanks for stopping by again.
