New Beginnings
Hello, this is Margaret Daley. Every New Year I think of it as a new beginning, but really every day is a new beginning. A chance to do what I need to do. Put the old behind me and move forward. Although I don't make New Year resolutions, I do set goals for myself and try to strive toward them. I especially have to as a writer with deadlines to meet. If I didn't, I would be a week away from a book being due and not have anything written. I've heard of writers who can write eight, nine or ten thousands words in a day. I'm not one of them. My brain doesn't work that way, even when I know exactly what I want to write. So goals are important in my life, but at the same time I need to remain flexible. If I don't, I get very stressed. Instead of having a daily word count I need to write, I have a weekly one so if I need to do something one day that isn't writing related, I can make it up another day and not feel like I made my goal.
I wish everyone a blessed 2012. I hope all your dreams and goals come true. I also want to thank you for reading my blog. I have some amazing authors coming up this year on the blog with all kinds of different books. Come back each week and see who I'm hosting.

Hi Margaret, I like how you have your goals. we learnt to make goals achievable and measurable and realistic.
I know I too with out goals or guides I things wouldn't get done here or would be done at the last minute.

I'm like you - have to make goals so things get done, but leave room in them for flexibility.
Put the old behind & move forward - your thought reminds me of Phil 3:13-14, & how in our Christian lives that's what we're supposed to do, but sometimes get a little too caught up with the mistakes of the past, rather than the forgiveness we've received & the reaching forward to what God intends us to be.
Happy New Year! - I'm looking forward to your Men of Texas series coming out this year that I've seen advertised on your website.

I struggle with when to strive toward a goal and when to let up a bit and admit when "life got in the way"... It's a balance I haven't found yet.

Margaret, thanks for reminding me to leave some flexibility in my goal setting. I tend to say thus and so needs done period and don't allow for 'life' to happen.
Blessings to you for a successful new year. I'm looking forward to your upcoming books.

Margaret, I usually do a page count when I'm trying to finish a book. It usually is 6-7 pages daily. My trick is it doesn't matter when I write those pages as long as I write. And I usually break it into 2 session, 4pgs then 3pgs. It works for me. I also take into consideration how long I have, take the number of days and divide it into the number of pages. When I get toward the end of a project, I'm not as strict with my page count.

Hi Margaret. Like you I set goals. Wish I could write 10,ooo words a day, but that darned day job gets in the way. Besides, I'd figure out a way to procrastinate and do other things. Having only so much time keeps me focused. My same wish for you.

I feel the same about goals. I need a week to achieve my goals instead of a day otherwise I stress out.
