New Beginnings

Keli Gwyn here to talk about beginnings.

It's the time of year when my Facebook feed is filled with pictures of students heading off to the first day of school. I smile each time I see one, recalling the joy I felt every year when I headed off to begin a new grade.

The first day of school picture at our place looked different this year. My retired teacher husband and our daughter, who is pursuing a teaching credential, are both working as substitute teachers.

To our surprise, their first guest teacher assignments of the year took place on the same day at the same school. They got to carpool to work.

Even though they had to leave the house by 6 am, I was up with camera in hand ready to capture their departure. A surge of pride rushed through me as I watched two generations of Gwyn teachers head off.

Questions for You

Did you look forward to starting a new school year?

What new beginnings are you looking forward to?

Keli, our kids are grown. The two oldest granddaughters are in school. One is homeschooled and in the fifth grade and one is starting first grade so I get to experience the excitement of school with them. I do remember how fun it was to start school each year.
My husband and I are both retired, but one day, once the granddaughters are much older we plan to move to the mountains. That will be our next new beginning.

I'm a teacher so it's a bittersweet beginning, sort of a "Yes, I'm ready" combined with a "Wait, I need two more weeks."

This year, I've a new English 101 textbook to learn and I'm looking forward to that.
My son is in six grade, first year of middle school (but he's in a k8 school so not too bad)

Mary, since our daughter is single, I can only imagine the fun of watching grandchildren start school. One day...

What fun to be anticipating a move to the mountains. I hope your dreams come true.

Pamela, as the wife of a retired teacher, I totally get the bittersweet side of school starting. Gwynly experienced the same pull to go back but regrets over not having gotten completed all the summer projects on his list. I hope your school year goes smoothly and that the transition to the new textbook is as much fun as you've anticipated.

Have fun watching your son begin middle school. Those are interesting years.

I'm an empty nester but when I was in school (oh so many years ago!), I loved every "back to school" year! I loved school! I also loved when it was time for my kids to go back to school! They also loved going back to school. Now that two of my daughters are teachers, I sort of feel like I'm in the "back to school" mode again! Now that I have grandchildren, I look forward to the day they start school and I can enjoy their first days of school! My oldest is 4 1/2 so next year we start all over again!

I always loved school; been out many years as has our daughter and grandson is in college.
Wow, your daughter favors you! What a joy for her/Dad to be so close.

Valri, it sounds like you have many wonderful back-to-school memories. How fun that you get to enjoy a whole new generation of back-to-school days via your grandchildren.

You must be so proud to have two teachers in your family. I couldn't be happier that our daughter has chosen the profession, as did her father before her.

Jackie, how proud you must be to watch your grandson heading off to college. I hope he has a good year.

I'm quite happy to have our gal close. She's in a nearby town that is fifteen minutes away--close enough to visit often but not so close that she feels stifled.
